Students in Advanced Placement Biology performed a technique called DNA fingerprinting with the help of a kit from Cornell University. Students compared DNA from a mother, baby and two possible fathers to determine the paternity of the child. Once isolated, the DNA was cut with restriction enzymes into fragments. The fragments were then pulled through a gel using an electric field to separate the DNA fragments based on size. The biological father was determined by matching banding patterns in the DNA that formed on the gel. This technique is used to show students how science can help solve issues of paternity testing, evolutionary relatedness, and crime scene investigations.

Recently students in our College Costa Rica/Climate class had an opportunity to hear from some special guest speakers. Chenango Forks alum Josh Black joined the class for a virtual visit, where he shared his undergraduate research at Eckerd College in Florida, working on artificial reefs to boost biodiversity and improve water quality in the canals of Central Florida. He also discussed his current work in the Florida Keys, studying the effects of rising ocean temperatures on fish populations and instances of spinning fish. The students also had an opportunity to visit Mr. Edwards' classroom, where they explored a live reef ecosystem seeing corals, anemones, and fish up close. Mr. Edwards highlighted the fragile environment they live in, along with the importance of preserving these ecosystems and the restoration efforts around the world to rebuild and sustain coral reefs.

WARNING, FAKE BLOOD: Chenango Forks alumna Jenna Wolf stopped by our Art Department this week to introduce students to exciting careers in Special Effects (SFX) makeup by demonstrating realistic “cuts,” “bruises,” and “frostbite” techniques!
After graduating from CF, Jenna earned her NYS Cosmetology license and spent 15 years as a hairstylist. Today, she brings her expertise to BT BOCES, where she teaches the same skills she once studied.
The class kicked off the year by exploring several “horror” films across various subgenres, analyzing how violence is portrayed and why we react the way we do. With Jenna’s insights, students now understand how knowing the creative process behind SFX can transform our viewing experience.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jili O'Hern has been a driving force on our team with her infectious energy, outstanding crowd engagement, and consistent leadership throughout the season. Recently, she took the initiative to organize team gatherings before competitions to boost morale and encouraged her teammates to exchange positive notes, fostering a spirit of unity and support. Congratulations, Jili!
