Tom Reid, a 1998 graduate of Chenango Forks High School, has spent the last 19 years as a professor at Broome Community College, and returned in late October to share his expertise and knowledge of STEM related topics to CFHS math students.
Reid's connection with Broome dates back to 2001 or 2002 when he participated in an education program at Geneseo, which allowed him to spend a day shadowing a teacher at Broome. During his visit, he shadowed Mr. Swartout, whom he had for two out of his four years as a student at the college. This experience made the campus feel both familiar and filled with new aspects.
In collaboration with the Dean of STEM at Broome, Tom Reid worked closely with Dan Palmer as an adjunct to bring his dreams to fruition. He is here to share his knowledge and insights, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with math classes at the college.
SUNY Broome has been actively seeking ways to enhance the connections between high schools, their teachers, and students, and Tom Reid's journey aligns perfectly with this vision. Last year, Mr. Palmer and Mr. Hughes collaborated with Reid to help redesign the curriculum for two classes at Broome, a significant step in bridging the gap between high schools and college.
The ongoing collaboration between high schools and Broome Community College has been nothing short of amazing, emphasizing the importance of nurturing such partnerships in education. Tom Reid's dedication and experience serve as an inspiring example of what can be achieved when passionate individuals work together to improve educational opportunities for all.
