Dear Chenango Forks Families,

I hope this newsletter finds you well as we move into February. This month's update includes exciting news about our ongoing capital improvements, important legislative updates, and a focus on student well-being and leadership.
Capital Improvements Update
We are thrilled to announce the completion of the new high school locker rooms and team rooms! This significant upgrade provides our student-athletes with modern and functional facilities. The district continues to make progress on other capital improvement projects, and we appreciate your patience and support throughout this process.
Heat Index Law
Governor Hochul recently signed a new law addressing extreme heat conditions in schools. This legislation requires schools to implement specific procedures to protect students and staff during periods of high heat. We are currently reviewing the law and integrating its requirements into our existing emergency plans. An amendment has already been drafted by the legislature that includes the language of “when applicable”. You can find the details of the law here: Heat Index Law
Superintendent Student Board of Education Representative
A new state law now mandates that school districts include a student representative on the Board of Education. This has been a goal of the Chenango Forks board as well and the district is excited to add this valuable member to our district meetings. This student will provide valuable insights and perspectives but will not be a voting member and will not participate in executive session discussions. We are excited to announce that we are working with the high school student council and our Board of Education to develop a selection process for our first student board member, who will begin their term in September of the next school year. We look forward to having direct student feedback as a regular part of our meetings.
Cell Phone Policy Update
Governor Hochul has indicated that new legislation is forthcoming regarding cell phone use in schools. While we currently have a cell phone policy in place, we will adjust it as needed once the specifics of the new law are released. Our administrative staff has been engaged in a book study focusing on recent research on the impact of cell phones on student education and social-emotional well-being. In the coming weeks, we will be sending out a survey to students, parents, and staff to gather your input on this important topic.
Character Education and Leadership Development
Our character education habit of focus for February is "Think Win-Win". This habit encourages collaboration and mutually beneficial solutions. In addition to our character education program, the district is actively working to create more opportunities for students to develop and showcase their leadership skills. We believe that fostering leadership qualities is essential for student success and preparation life after graduation.
We hope you have a fabulous February Forks Nation!
Sincerely,
Tom Burkhardt, Superintendent
